What is the Bible?

The Bible is a narrative of God's actions in the world and His purpose for all creation. Its writing took place over sixteen centuries and was done by more than forty people. It is a marvelous collection of 66 books with different styles, all conveying God's message that He wants to communicate to us.

It is a compilation of booklets containing wondrous and diverse literary styles. It contains many stories about the lives of both good and wicked people, about battles and journeys, about the life of Jesus, and about the early activities of the church. It is delivered to us through narratives and dialogues, proverbs and parables, songs and allegories, histories and prophecies.

The stories in the Bible are not written like news events. Instead, they are stories passed down over many years before being written down later. However, the same themes can be found throughout the entire book. Among the diversity, there are also noticeable similarities here.

So what is the Bible? In addition to all the above, the Bible is:

A guide to live gloriously. It gives us a map for the perilous journey through life. In other words, as we sail through the ocean of life, the Bible is our anchor.

A repository of amazing stories for children and adults alike. Do you remember Noah's ark? Joseph's coat of many colors? Daniel in the lions' den? Jonah and the fish? The parables of Jesus? These stories emphasize the triumphs and failures of ordinary people.

A refuge in troubles. Witnessed by people in pain, suffering, in prison, and grieving; approaching the Bible in times of desperation provides strength.

A treasury of insights into who we are. We are not meaningless robots but marvelous beings of God who loves us and provides us with purpose and destiny.

A manual for everyday living. Here lie the standards for our behavior, guidelines for distinguishing right from wrong, and principles to help us navigate a confusing society that often says "anything goes."
